Helios-40-2 is the undisputed leader
5/5,
In my personal ranking of the best Soviet portrait lens, Helios-40-2 is the undisputed leader, while having a huge lead. Second place holds the most popular fixed-telephoto Jupiter-37A, and closes the top three sharp outrageously Kaleinar-5H. Therefore, without further ado - Helios-40-2 is ideal for portraits.
Helios 40-2 is a modification of the lens Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 1,5 / 75.
Myths about Helios-40:
1. The first myth advocates the view that Helios-40 was copied from some very ancient and popular lens. Often cite the example of Leica Summarex 1,5 / 85 or Cyclops 1.5 / 85, produced at the Rostov optical-mechanical plant. About Summarex - a real myth. About Cyclops, all just noborot, Cyclops was a copy of Helios-40 without diaphragm.
2. aperture in the lens is not really F / 1.5, and the F / 1.3, motivated by the fact that guests were not value 1.3 because 1.5 wrote. Thus, the lens is still credited with far greater luminosity.
3. There is a myth that using the Helios-40 anyone can pull off a chic portrait. This is misleading. Since the lens is very difficult to work with. To achieve a good quality image with the correct focus point and the correct composition - will need a good try. This stems from the fact that Helios-40-2 harsh on F1.5 only in the center, and the depth of field is very small. Cope with the Helios-40-2 can only person with experience in chiropractic optics.

The main features of the lens Helios-40-2:
1. The design of the lens Helios-40-2 almost everything is made of metal and glass. Lens older than me, and continues to delight his work. This is a serious indicator of excellent build quality.
2. The lens is very large aperture for this focal length. The maximum aperture of F1.5. It is only 1.15 times less than the classical value of F1.4 portrait lens for a 85mm focal length. The difference between F1.5 and cheap 85mm F1.8 with Fix is exactly 1.44 times. Large aperture is great for shooting in low light.
3. The focal length in 85mm sprinkled on Canon 1.6x gives EGF 136mm. Cropped with Nikon 1.5x EGF will 127,5mm. Sprinkled on Helios-40-2 is also an excellent portrait lens. The lens can be and should be used on a full frame unlike Nikon DX lenses or Canon EF-S.
4. The lens has an additional ring preset aperture. The ring itself is located in front of the lens aperture and the ring pre-installation - in the middle. At what preset realized very convenient, as it has a great grip ring. This is one of the few lenses, which really is convenient to use the preset aperture ring. At the same time, the lens has no aperture control semiautomatic (pusher has no aperture for the cameras).
5. Focus ring has a smooth ride. A serious drawback of Helios-40-2 is the fact that the ring achieve focus is set too close to the lens mount. Twist it is not very convenient. And even worse is that when focus is achieved prevents the clamp tripod socket, which
is located closer to the bayonet. First, instead of the sharpness of habit twist biggest ring - ring preset aperture. It's a little unnerving, but eventually you get used to
6. At Helios-40-2 has tripod socket. This suggests that the lens is really heavy, clamp fixing is near to the camera. Clamp can rotate 360 degrees on the lens and fixed by a special lock, which twists and pinches the clamp. Tripod mount standard.
7. The lens Helios-40-2 diaphragm with 10 petals. Number of petals larger than the average, but when it is closed a hole like a circular saw. Luminous spots in the area to blur close the iris become "circular saw". The lens Tair-11A, 37A, Jupiter, Jupiter-11, Jupiter-9 number of petals even more and they form a fairly smooth hole without nuts and gears, because more suitable as a portrait lens to close the aperture. Helios-40-2 saves only that the most interesting (from an artistic point of view) it gives a picture on the full aperture F1.5. Below is an example of photo discs from a circular saw in the area of confusion.
8. The lens is quite heavy. On the amateur light CZK's may be a problem with weight balance. I think it was the same problem when shooting on film zenith. Kilogram on my Nikon D200 lens Helios-40-2 sits like a native, without causing inconvenience. Due to the large grip handles D200 quite easily operated with Helios-40-2. I often shoot at the camera heavier weight than one D200 + Helios-40-2
9. The lens has enlightenment. I found no reliable information about MS, or it is not MS. Color yellow enlightenment.
